Ghosts were generally identified by the US military as a potentially effective element of psychological warfare operations in Vietnam. In traditional Vietnamese culture, these ghosts are known as “Lynn Hung” or wandering souls. Instead, tradition has it, and their spirit was left to wander the battlefield, interrupted between this life and the next. That is, they die violently away from their family homes, from the living world to the spiritual world. The platoon is identified by a four-digit number, with the first number indicating which battalion they are from.In Vietnam’s traditional understanding of death, ghosts play an important role in connection with the concepts of “good death” and “bad death.” Many of the nearly one million North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed in action were understood to be in the “Chet Duong” category. Each company is identified by a letter in alphabetical order. Each company runs a 13-week training schedule and graduate on the same day.Ī battalion is identified by number, 1-4. RTBs are divided into companies, and each company is divided further into platoons. Each RTB has a color and crest associated with it. Currently, MCRD San Diego has only integrated at the company level, with most companies consisting of five all-male platoons and one all-female platoon.Įach MCRD includes Recruit Training Battalions, or RTBs. As of February 2021, the Marine Corps has started sending a limited number of female recruits to MCRD San Diego.
In the past, every female recruit would go to MCRD Parris Island, regardless of their residence location.
Recruits east of the Mississippi River attend MCRD PI. Recruits west of the Mississippi River attend MCRD SD. Though there are some exceptions, for the most part, the Mississippi River is the dividing point for which MCRD your son or daughter will attend. Their acronyms are MCRDSD and MCRDPI, respectively. They are called Marine Corps Recruit Depots (MCRDs) and are located in San Diego, California and Parris Island, South Carolina. There are two facilities for recruit training.
